All About "ICE" Modules

What are ICE Modules?  In the audio industry, ICE is a trademarked technology for Class D audio amplifier modules with built-in switched-mode power supplies. ICE stands for "Intelligent, Compact, and Efficient power conversion technology". An ICE module is a small circuit board which contains both a power amplifier and a power supply capable of powering not only the associated power amp, but also the complete circuitry of the guitar or bass amplifier.

What manufacturers are using ICE Modules these days?    Fender was probably the first guitar amp manufacturer to begin using ICE modules, in their Rumble series of bass amps.    Now, they are expanding to include them in some of their Tone Master series amps.   Gallien-Krueger, Mesa-Boogie, Aguilar, Ampeg, Darkglass, Genzler and Henrickson are using them in their new models as well.

Who makes these ICE Modules?    ICE circuit boards are made in various sizes starting at 50 watts output power and going on up.    They are manufactured by ICEPower. ICEPower was founded in 1999 as a joint venture between inventor Karsten Nielsen and the high-end consumer electronics brand Bang & Olufsen.  They became a wholly owned subsidiary of Bang & Olufsen in 2008.   Spun off from Bang & Olufsen in 2016 through a management buyout supported by the Danish private equity fund Industri Udvikling.   Most recently, ICEPower acquired a majority stake by the US institutional investment firm Crestline Investors in late 2023.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Troubleshooting of the amplifier must be performed by a qualified individual to ensure that the original ICE module is actually the cause of the problem. A failed ICE module typically causes the following symptoms: No power, including no illumination of the pilot light, along with no sound whatsoever. Note that the identical symptoms could also be caused by something as simple as a dead power outlet in the building, a bad power cord, or a defective power switch on the amplifier. Lack of any sound could also be caused by a failed speaker.

Most ICE Modules are special order, and are therefore not returnable. All modules are checked for proper operation before they are shipped. Save yourself an unnecessary costly expenditure by determining first that your ICE module is actually defective before placing an order. Having a reputable and qualified technician check out the amplifier is recommended.
