Reverse Cam Gear

MBK-89-HLGR - $8.95

This is the gear that drives the half-load arm (see picture to the right) or arm that takes tape behind the pinch roller.   This gear is a very common problem in these Sony VCRs.   Common symptoms include: VCR tries to load a cassette and fails.   The VCR may load the cassette but jam when trying to load tape around the the head.   The VCR will shut down in most cases but may simply unload the tape.   The VCR may also eat tape or leave a loop in the tape when it ejects.

Half-Load Arm

MBK-89-HLA - $18.85

The Half Load Arm is a very common problem in these Sony VCRs.   The MBK-89-HLA comes with the arm as well as an instruction sheet that tells you how to remove and replace the arm.   It is a good idea to check the plastic gears around the arm before you order (especially the MBK-89-HLGR gear, to the left).   It is very common for one of them to break or chip a tooth when the arm fails.  The arm needs replacing when it feels "sluggish" when you move it with your finger.   It should move easily, but with a snappy spring action back to its resting location.

Reverse Cam Drive Gear

MBK-89-HLDGR - $8.95

This is the gear that drives the IW-121 gear, pictured above.   This gear is also a common problem in these Sony VCRs. The symptoms of a bad IW-223 gear are pretty much the same as the symptoms of the IW-121 gear.

Drive Gear

MBK-89-HLMGR - $9.50

This gear is driven by the MBK-89-HLDGR gear, pictured to the left.   This gear is also a common problem in these Sony VCRs.   Common symptoms include: VCR tries to load a cassette and fails.   The VCR may load the cassette but jam when trying to load tape around the the head.   The VCR will shut down in most cases but may simply unload the tape.   The VCR may also eat tape or leave a loop in the tape when it ejects.

Cam Drive Gear

MBK-89-CDG - $8.95

This is the gear that drives the cam gear.   This gear is also a common problem in these Sony VCRs.   The symptoms of a broken MBK-89-CDG gear vary, depending upon where it breaks at or if it strips teeth.   The most common symptom is the VCR will accept a cassette but will shut down when it tries to play, FF, REW, or REC.

Cam Arm

MBK-89-CARM - $12.50

This is the arm that sits under the cam gear and drives the tension arm.   This arm is a fairly common problem in these Sony VCRs.   The tip of this arm, that drives the tension arm, will break and cause the tension arm to remain stationary.

Cam Gear

MBK-89-CAM - $13.95

This is the main cam gear.   This gear is also a common problem in these Sony VCRs.   The symptoms of a broken MBK-89-CAM gear vary, depending upon where it breaks at or if it strips teeth.   The most common symptom is the VCR will accept a cassette but will shut down when it tries to play, FF, REW, or REC.

Slide Plate

MBK-89-SP - $12.50

This is the main slide plate.   This plate can also be a problem in these Sony VCRs.   The symptoms of a broken MBK-89-SP gear vary, depending upon where it breaks at or if it strips teeth.   The most common symptom is the VCR will accept a cassette but will shut down when it tries to play, FF, REW, or REC.

Arm Limiter Function

MBK-89-ALF - $12.50

The Arm Limiter Function is a fairly common problem in these Sony VCRs.   The arm is located on the bottom of the chassis and controls the transition gear.   When this little plastic arm breaks it will cause the VCR to fail in Play, FF, and REW.   When broken the idler clutch simply will not engage properly.

Drive Belt

MBK-89-BL - $10.50

This is the main drive belt for these Sony VCRs, the only belt used in the unit.  The belt is a "toothed" belt, made of durable polystyrene (a petroleum based styrene derivative) rather than rubber.
