VCR Power Supplies come in two varieties: linear and switch-mode. Linear supplies are easy to spot by their large, heavy transformer. Switch-mode supplies have a small transformer (no bigger than about 1 1/4" x 1"), and the supply is often self-contained in a shielded housing. Switch-mode supplies are being employed in most VCRs manufactured today, but were widely used in Panasonic-built VCRs all the way back to the mid-1980’s. Switch-mode supplies can be difficult to troubleshoot due to their design, and because
you usually will find several components which have failed. Although some switch-mode power supplies can be replaced, the units are generally costly. Rebuilding the existing supply is the most economical solution. |
Studio Sound Electronics offers switch-mode power supply rebuild kits for a variety of models under the following brand names:

LF-202 Power Supply Line Filter

LF-201 Power Supply Line Filter
Regardless of brand, every VCR switch-mode power supply uses a line filter like the one pictured at the left. This filter keeps interference from the oscillation of the power supply from coupling back to the power lines and causing problems on other audio/video devices in the same household. Sometimes you may find this filter is damaged (evidenced by burnt, black windings instead of shiny copper wire as shown in the photo). The LF-201 line filter is universal for all switch-mode VCR power supplies, and (if needed) should only be installed in conjunction with the
appropriate power supply rebuild kit.

What type of parts are contained in a power supply rebuild kit?
Most kits contain approximately 20 components, including transistors, diodes, resistors, opto-isolators, capacitors, and IC's.
Prices range from about $15-$20, and basic soldering/desoldering tools and skills are needed (no surface-mount technology is involved). See our selection of Soldering Tools
. The kits are designed to repair approximately 95% of all switch-mode power supply failures, and most take about 30-45 minutes to install. Note: Dangerous voltages can be present in this section of the VCR. You should have basic electronics knowledge and experience to work on a VCR power supply.
